How important is chain maintenance and lubrication?
Chain maintenance and lubrication is an important and very simple activity that is required to keep your bike in good condition. Regular lubrication helps the chain last longer and ensures better gearing. However, the frequency of lubrication will depend on various factors such as the conditions of use.
To tell if a chain needs oiling, you can simply touch it with your fingertip. If the tip of the finger remains oily and black, there is probably enough oil left on the chain. However, if the chain is dry and doesn't leave an oil mark on the finger, it might be time to oil it. It is recommended to lubricate the chain at the beginning and end of the cycling season, as well as after washing the bike.
At the beginning of the season, it is a good idea to check the length of the chain for wear. A worn chain can damage the sprocket and cause other problems. Chain length and wear gauges are available at bike shops.
A well-oiled chain ensures quiet and efficient operation of the bicycle gears. If you hear a chirping sound while driving, it may be time to oil the chain.
If a thick black layer forms on the chain, it is worth considering a service visit and washing the chain. Washing can also be done at home using special equipment.
To lubricate the chain, fix the bike so that you can freely turn the pedals in reverse. Reverse the pedals slowly and apply 5-7 drops of oil to the top and inside of the chain. A special chain wax can be used to provide better protection against dust. After oiling the chain, it is recommended to ride the bike over to distribute the oil and wax evenly.
Use oil specially designed for bicycles, which you can buy in stores. Remember to apply the oil regularly, but only in small amounts.
Happy and safe travels!
